James Moody Sessions

James Moody recorded his legendary Moody's Mood for Love during his first visit in Sweden in 1949. That was after the Jazz Festival in Paris, where Metrome founder and drummer Anders Burman invited him to record in Sweden. Moody played two weeks at a dance restaurant in Stockholm and participated in a few jam sessions.

His modern harmonics and expressive style scared some dancers, but gave the young Swedish musicians a close contact with be-bop. The first encounters came already in 1948 with Chubby Jackson's group and the Dizzy Gillespie big band - and then with Charlie Parker's 1950 tour.

James Moody recalls in an interview that he picked up Lars Gullins' alto for the ballad recording, but it actually belonged to Per-Arne Croona. Lars was not even present during the 1949 recordings that were dominated by already established musicians as Gösta Theselius, Arne Domnérus and Thore Swanerud.

Gullin only recorded with Moody during his second visit, in 1951. They made ten tunes together, all available on CD.

The sides are dominated by Moody, but Lars has a strong solo on How Deep and floats lightly in a Lestorian, or rather Getz-like, manner in the blues Hey Jim and on tenor in the Lady be Good-derivative Two Fathers, both in solos and in trading fours with Moody.

Originally issued on Prestige and Esquire LPs. A few also on Metronome 78s. Reissue: "Moody's Blues; James Moody and the Swedish All Stars", Prestige CD24228.
